When the Prophet (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) approached the mount of as-Safa, he recited the ayah, ‘Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the defining marks of Allah.’ Then he said: ‘I begin with what Allah began with.’ Thus, he began with as-Safa, ascending it until he could see the Ka‘bah. He then faced the Qiblah, declared the oneness of Allah, and magnified Him, saying: ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belongs the dominion, all praise is due to Allah, and He is able to do all things. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.’ He made different supplications’ between these phrases and repeated the phrases three times. He then did the same at al-Marwah as he had done at as-Safa.
