The description of wudu’ (ablution)
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all creation. May Allah’s salah and salam be upon the noblest of Prophets and Messengers. Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, stated:
((O People of Iman, when you want to perform the prayer but are in a
state of minor impurity, you must first perform wudu’ by washing your faces, washing your forearms up to and including the elbows, passing your wet hands over your heads, and washing your feet up to and including the ankles.)) [5:6].
Additionally, the Prophet (may Allah's salah and salam be upon him) said, "The prayer of anyone who does not perform wudu is not accepted." This was reported by Muslim.
Istinja (washing of the private parts):
For those who invalidate their wudu’ through the passing of urine, faeces, or anything else exiting from these passages, istinja is required. For other cases, istinja is not necessary.
One cleans the area using water three times or more until it is purified, whether it be the back or front private parts of a man or woman. Water is preferred, but combining the use of stones (istijmar) and water is even more complete and virtuous.
Intention (niyyah):
The Muslim intends in their heart to perform wudu’ without uttering the intention verbally.
Saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah):
It is Sunnah to say "Bismillah" before the beginning of wudu’. A group of scholars have deemed it obligatory.
Washing the hands:
It is Sunnah to wash the hands three times at the start of wudu’.
Rinsing the mouth (madmadah), sniffing water into the nose (istinshaq), and blowing it out (istinthar):
This is done three times, ideally with three handfuls of water. If unable, six handfuls may suffice. Madmadah means to place water in the mouth, swirl it, and spit it out. Istinshaq is drawing water into the nose, and istinthar is blowing it out.
Washing the face:
One must wash the entire face, from ear to ear and from the hairline down to the chin.
Washing the hands up to and including the elbows:
Wash the hands from the fingertips to the elbows, ensuring the elbows are included, starting with the right hand, then the left.
Wiping over the head:
Place the hands on the front of the head, wipe to the back of the head, then return to the front. Next, wipe the ears by inserting the index fingers into the ear canals and wiping the outer parts with the thumbs.
Washing the feet up to and including the ankles:
Wash the feet from the toes’ onset and up to the ankles, ensuring the ankles are included. Begin with the right foot, then the left.
*It is Sunnah to perform each act of washing or rinsing three times, except for wiping the head and ears, which is done once.
Performing the washing once, twice, or three times is all valid. It is authentically documented that the Prophet) may Allah's salah and salam be upon him( performed wudu’ by washing the parts in question once each, twice each, and three times each. Likewise, the Prophet) may Allah's salah and salam be upon him( would sometimes wash certain parts three times and others twice or once, demonstrating ease in the matter – and all praise is due to Allah for that.
It is obligatory upon every Muslim to remove anything that prevents water from reaching their skin:
The person performing wudu’ must remove anything preventing water from reaching the skin or nails of the area being washed, such as dough, thick grease, wax, or nail polish applied by women.
Upon the completion of wudu’, it is from the Sunnah to recite the following authentic supplications:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَريكَ له وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
I bear witness that no deity has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, without any partner. I further bear witness that Muhammad is His worshipping servant and Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and those who purify themselves.
The Prophet (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) said: "There is none among you who performs wudu perfectly, then says,
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
'I bear witness that no deity has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His worshipping servant and Messenger,'
except that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him, and he may enter through whichever he wishes." This was reported by Muslim. At-Tirmidhi added with a sound chain:
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and those who purify themselves.
