The Ruling and Virtues of Hajj

Its Ruling: Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam and its obligation is proven by the Qur’an, Sunnah, and consensus of the scholars.
Allah, the Most High, stated, ((The performance of Hajj at the Ka‘bah is an obligation people must fulfill for Allah if able to do so.)) [3:97]. In addition, Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) narrated that the Prophet (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) said, “Islam is built upon five… and perform Hajj at the Ka‘bah.” This was reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

The scholars have relayed a consensus that it is among the pillars of Islam. Hajj is obligatory at least once in a lifetime, as supported by the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in which he said, “Once the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) delivered a sermon and said: ‘O people, Allah has made Hajj obligatory upon you; so perform Hajj.’ Someone present asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is this obligation every year?’ The Messenger of Allah remained silent until that person repeated their statement three times. Upon that, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) said: ‘If I had said: ‘Yes’, it would have become obligatory upon you and you would not have been able to do it.’ This was reported by Muslim.

The Virtues of Performing the Hajj Rites:

Al-Bukhari and Muslim both reported from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) said, “There is no reward more fitting for the Hajj which is mabroor (i.e. accepted) other than Paradise.”
Abu Hurayrah also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) said, “If someone performs Hajj at this House while refraining from intercourse and its precursors, as well as from sins, they shall return as sinless as they were on the day their mother gave birth to them.” Likewise, he narrated that, “The Prophet (may Allah’s salah and salam be upon him) was asked: ‘What is the best action?’ He replied ‘To have Iman in Allah and His Messenger.’ He was then asked: ‘Which is the next?’ He said: ‘To participate in Jihad in the path of Allah.’ He was then asked: ‘Which is the next?’ He said: ‘To perform a Hajj Mabrur.’

Ibn Hajar said, “It is said that ‘al-Hajj al-Mabrur’ is the one which is accepted. Some have said it is the one which is not mixed with any sin whilst others have said it is the one which is sincerely devoted to Allah.” [See Fath al-Bari 1/87].
